We use landscape as a metaphor because it gives form to the formless — your inner emotional world. When we think of rivers, mountains, forests, or skies, we naturally associate them with movement, stillness, struggle, or peace. These elements speak a symbolic language your subconscious already understands.

By asking you to draw and reflect on parts of a landscape, we're inviting your emotions to express themselves in a way that's creative, indirect, and deeply personal. Instead of analyzing your feelings directly, you're giving shape to them — through the imagery, textures, and metaphors that make sense to you.

For example, someone might draw a dried-up river and realize it reflects feeling emotionally drained or overworked.

There's no “right” meaning — it's your unique emotional landscape, and every element carries meaning based on your life experience and imagination.

This process helps you access insights you might not reach through words alone. Landscapes become mirrors, revealing what’s going on beneath the surface.

Why a landscape?

For example, the 19th - century German chemist Kekulé, researching in to the molecular structure of benzene, dreamed of a snake with its tail in it's mouth, a symbol known as the Ouroboros, and this dream inspired him to propose the ring structure of benzene in 1865. The snake biting its tail symbolized a closed ring of carbon atoms, which Kekulé then used to conceptualize the structure of benzene

Everything comes from the client during a session, the guide is only there to make the environment right, and to navigate the space for the subconscious to make contact with the drawer, based upon their known intention with an understanding of the archetypes in the landscape that may hold certain archetypal ques for the client's subconscious as a platform to get through to the conscious awareness of the drawer.

The subconscious needs a platform to speak through, ROC Technique is a way to do that. It's akin do dreaming while you're awake.

How is it like dreaming while you're awake??

No. All the guide needs to know if how you're feeling occasionally to guide the process.

Isn't what I draw just made up though?

The subconscious that speaks with images and emotions, meaning being the bridge between the subconscious and the conscious mind. The subconscious acts faster than the logical, conscious mind, that's why when in a session and asked a question and it's answered in a visual/ emotional way, the answers will be coming from your subconscious – you'll feel it.

(Studies suggest the subconscious mind processes information significantly faster than the conscious mind. A study by the University of Pennsylvania indicated that the subconscious mind can process information at a rate of 400 billion bits per second, which is far faster than the conscious mind's rate. Other research, like that of Dr. Stanislas Dehaene, has shown that the subconscious can process emotional information faster, influencing our perceptions and reactions).

What is the subconscious as opposed to the conscious?

"...The subconscious consists of a multitude of temporarily obscured thoughts, impressions, and images that, in spite of being lost, continue to influence our conscious minds".  C. Jung.

  • It holds deep-seated emotions, memories, fears, and desires.
  • These stored emotions often shape your reactions to situations, even if you don't consciously understand why.

While the conscious mind makes deliberate choices, the subconscious provides the underlying motivations, biases, and instincts that guide those choices.

The subconscious communicates through symbols, dreams, and writing, often revealing insights during moments of reflection, meditation, or creativity.

The subconscious is the higher mind, the wisdom of the body. The stored emotions in the body and the wisdom to heal them,

Do I have to disclose any private info about my life?

What symbols are asked about?

The session is about creating a literal visual inner landscape of one's emotions, this creates unique meaning to each client, no two landscapes are the same. And no two sessions with the same clients have ever been exactly the same.

What is individualisation, why should I care?

Jung's philosophy of life: Man becomes whole, integrated, calm fetile, and happy when (and only when) the process of individualisation in complete, when the conscious and unconscious have learned to live at peace and to compliment one another. - Man and his Symbols, Carl Jung.

Can the guide interpret my session?

No. Just as in dream interpretation, the meaning can be discussed yet ultimately will be known deepest to the drawer. The process of making art after being asked to draw certain symbols creates an emotional connection with the drawer and the page, there's an unspoken meaningful communication going on that while can be communicated to some degree, will be private only to the drawer.  Just like it's impossible to interpret someone else's dream, the guide can not interpret, only listen to t

Participating in something like the ROC Technique gives the subconscious space to relay a message to the drawer's conscious mind. Similar to reading.
